She maintains that most products made with petroleum – like, plastic, for instance, which is not bio-degradable – can also be made with resin and decompose more easily. Yet, Blanca Rodríguez-Chaves, the vice dean of the faculty of law at the Autonomous University of Madrid and an expert in environmental policies, believes that resin could provide an adequate alternative. And while this time-consuming process has now ceased across much of the world, in the past decade it has experienced something of a rebirth in Castilla y León, which is home to more resin manufacturers than anywhere else in Europe and one of the last places on the continent where the practice persists.Īccording to several studies, at the current rate of extraction, the Earth's oil reserves are expected to run dry sometime after 2050. Soon, workers were hacking into the bark of resin pines across the region in order to collect the valuable sap. But according to Alejandro Chozas, a professor in the forestry engineering department at Madrid Polytechnic University, it wasn't until the 19th and 20th Centuries that the extraction of pine resin became truly profitable in the Castilla y León region.Īs technology and industrialisation helped turn the thick, milky sap into things like plastics, varnishes, glues, tyres, rubber, turpentine and even food additives in the mid-19th Century, the owners of Castilla y León's dense Pinus pinaster forests saw an opportunity. ![]() ![]() The human body is considerably more able to survive g-forces that are perpendicular to the spine. A trained, fit individual wearing a g suit and practising the straining maneuver can, with some difficulty, sustain up to 9 g without loss of consciousness. A hard slap on the face may impose hundreds of g-s locally but may not produce any obvious damage a constant 15 g-s for a minute, however, may be deadly. Roller coasters typically do not expose the occupants to much more than about 3 g. An untrained individual not used to the g-straining maneuver can black out between 4 and 6 g, particularly if this is pulled suddenly. The g thresholds at which these effects occur depend on the training, age and fitness of the individual. Dreams are reported to follow g-LOC which are brief and vivid. This is doubly dangerous because, on recovery as g is reduced, a period of several seconds of disorientation occurs, during which the aircraft can dive into the ground. This is because when the body accelerates up at such high rates the blood rushes from the brain which causes loss of vision.Ī further increase in g-forces will cause g-LOC where consciousness is lost. ![]() Humans can withstand a positive acceleration forward at higher g-forces than they can withstand a positive acceleration upwards. The human body has different tolerances for g-forces depending on the acceleration direction. ![]() The reverse effect is experienced in advanced aerobatic maneuvers under negative g-forces, where excess blood moves towards the brain and eyes (" redout"). These effects are due to a reduction of blood flow to the eyes before blood flow to the brain is lost, because the extra pressure within the eye ( intraocular pressure) counters the blood pressure. If g-forces increase further, complete loss of vision will occur, while consciousness remains. As g-forces increase, visual effects include loss of colour vision (" greyout"), followed by tunnel vision (where peripheral vision is lost, retaining only the centre vision). ![]() ![]() (Nonetheless, Fox News remains the top rated cable network in total day and primetime including 8 p.m.) has fallen to its lowest since before Sept. He also called Makarov a "boy" despite his relatively advanced age, possibly implying a playful nature. He was described by Makarov as a "great Master who taught harmony and led the Guild to the proper path". Hades seems to be a calm and confident man who shows no signs of fear to his enemies, especially Makarov. When using Demon's Eye, his ears seem to get pointed, and his mustache and eyebrows jut out prominently upwards. He has some wrinkles on his face, as evident of his extremely advanced age nonetheless, despite this age, his figure is muscular and well defined. The book had no single source of inspiration, but rather represents the convergence of several ideas. It’s a scenario I had been thinking about for a number of years before it crystallised into a narrative form. Given my preoccupation with strangers in strange lands, it was an obvious one to tackle, a story about somebody leaving their home to find a new home in an unseen country, where even the most basic details of ordinary life are strange, confronting or confusing – not to mention beyond the grasp of familiar language. This was uppermost in my mind during the long period of work on The Arrival, a book which deals with the theme of migrant experience. ![]() We often find ourselves in new realities – a new school, job, relationship or country, any of which demand some reinvention of ‘belonging’. It especially rises to the surface when things go wrong with our usual lives, when something challenges our comfortable reality or defies our expectations – which is typically the moment when a good story begins too. I did have a vague sense of separateness, an unclear notion of identity or detachment from roots, on top of that traditionally contested concept of what it is to be Australian, or worse, un-Australian (whatever that might mean).īeyond any personal issues, though, I think that the ‘problem’ of belonging is perhaps more of a basic existential question that everybody deals with from time to time, if not on a regular basis. A vague awareness of Indigenous displacement (which later sharpened into focus with a project like The Rabbits) only further troubled any sense of a connection to a ‘homeland’ in this universe of bulldozed tabula rasa coastal dunes, and fast-tracked, walled-in housing estates.īeing a half-Chinese child at a time a place when this was fairly unusual may have compounded this, as I was constantly being asked ‘where are you from?’ to which my unsatisfactory response of ‘here’ only prompted a deeper inquiry. At least this was far more positive attention than the occasional low-level racism I experienced growing up in 1980’s Western Australia, and which I also noticed directed either overtly or surreptitiously at my Chinese father from time to time. More specifically, my parents pegged a spot in a new northern suburb that was quite devoid of any clear cultural identity or history. One contributing experience may have been that of growing up in Perth, one of the most isolated cities in the world, sandwiched between a vast desert and ocean. Whether this has anything to do with my own life, I’m not sure, it seems to be more of a subconscious than conscious concern. Looking over much of my previous work as an illustrator and writer, such as The Rabbits (about colonisation), The Lost Thing (about a creature lost in a strange city) or The Red Tree (a girl wandering through shifting dreamscapes), I realise that I have a recurring interest in notions of ‘belonging’, particularly the finding or losing of it. The following is an extract from an article written in 2006 for Viewpoint Magazine, describing some of the ideas and process behind this book. He is helped along the way by sympathetic strangers, each carrying their own unspoken history: stories of struggle and survival in a world of incomprehensible violence, upheaval and hope * With nothing more than a suitcase and a handful of currency, the immigrant must find a place to live, food to eat and some kind of gainful employment.
